This site contends that Islam and Islamism are different. Islam is the faith held by about two billion Muslims worldwide. Islamism is the reactionary anti-Western political movement which first emerged in the early 20th century Egypt and the Indian sub-continent.
The complication is that Islamism exists as an often-covert force within the broader Muslim community. It claims to speak for all Muslims and is hostile to those who challenge its views.
An advantage of seeing Islamism as politics is that it makes it overlap with western progressivism becomes clearer. Both are anti-modern, anti-democratic, intolerant of criticism and sceptical about the nation state.
